PipeSense successfully completes field testing of a dynamic leak detection system for high-pressure supercritical carbon dioxide pipelines in Texas
27 May 2026

PipeSense, an energy infrastructure technology provider, has completed field testing of a leak detection system on a high-pressure carbon dioxide pipeline in Texas. The software identified dense-phase carbon containment breaches within three minutes during trials on a 12-mile pipeline segment operating at 2,000 pounds per square inch.
The trial addresses a critical engineering challenge for carbon capture and storage infrastructure. Supercritical carbon dioxide, which takes on properties of both a liquid and a gas under high pressure, frequently triggers false alarms in traditional monitoring frameworks due to its volatile flow behavior.
Moreover, the new system uses processing units and high-sensitivity sensors at opposing pipeline terminals to isolate pressure waves. It recorded one false alarm over a multi-month period, allowing operators to avoid disruptive shutdowns.
Security concerns have slowed the approval of new carbon infrastructure projects across the US. However, federal energy projections indicate that the American carbon transport grid must expand twentyfold by mid-century to meet climate targets. This expansion requires moving millions of tons of industrial greenhouse gases to underground storage formations.
Midstream operators face stringent regulatory oversight and lengthy permitting timelines. Advanced telemetry systems are increasingly seen by industry executives as essential for satisfying safety compliance and accelerating regional approvals near populated areas.
Even the successful Texas evaluation provides a technical template for heavy industrial emitters aiming to reduce emissions. The commercial viability of large-scale carbon capture now depends on whether regulators accept these automated systems as sufficient protection for local communities.
